AUTHOR VISIT

Year 7 pupils return to Lower School for ‘Roman Mysteries’

Year 7 pupils from Colston’s School joined Years 4, 5 and 6 in the Lower School to hear at first hand from author Caroline Lawrence how she brought ancient Rome to life through the 17 novels, short stories, quiz books, travel guides and TV series that make up the highly popular Roman Mysteries series

The American writer has built up a massive following among readers aged from 7 – 14 by providing insights into almost every aspect of Roman life including social structure, daily routines, entertainment and leisure.

“This has taken 10 years of my life,” she explained while signing nearly 100 brand new copies of various Roman Mysteries in the Lower School Library.

Caroline is now moving on to the Western frontier of North America during the 1860s silver boom with a new series, the Western Mysteries. The first is written and due to appear next June.

“Again they are aimed at young readers with a keen sense of curiosity about the past. But I often hear from readers well into adulthood too.”

Pam Webley, English Co-ordinator at Colston’s Lower, said: “Because of the age profile of the Roman Mysteries readership we thought it would be a very good idea to invite Year 7 pupils from the Upper School to come back for this event.”

Dr Julie Tovey, Head of English at the Upper School, added: “I’m glad to see such strong links between the two schools through the libraries and various reading initiatives. It’s excellent that this author visit can be shared.”
