Colston’s 1st XV prepare for new rugby season

Colston’s will be relying heavily on experience this year with almost all of the squad having played Senior rugby last season.

With many seeing this as their final opportunity to impress senior rugby academies, motivation should be high and it will be up to the coaches to channel this commitment into good team performances.

Having travelled to Truro for a pre-season tournament, the boys returned feeling confident but realising that much work has to be done in a very short time before the start of the season.

Once again Colston’s have organised possibly the hardest fixture list in English Rugby, playing most of the top English schools and also Blackrock College and Methodist College from Ireland. It is also nice to see our old rivals Llandovery College back on our fixture list.

One of the highlights of the year will be a multi-national tournament at Blackrock over the half term period but every Saturday should see a tense and hopefully exciting game against a top school from the British Isles.

Captain for the season will be Tom Baker who suffered a serious knee injury last year and missed the end of the season. To his credit he has come back even stronger and has the greatest respect from the squad and staff.

This season Colston’s are hoping to develop a much closer link with Bristol RFC and positive moves have already been made. New Academy manager Liam Middleton is helping to organise coaching clinics and Bristol fly half Adrian Jarvis will be helping out during senior games afternoons.

Colston’s have in recent years produced many players who have signed on for Bristol (Alex Clarke, James Phillips, Iain Grieve, Luke Eves to name but a few) and it is hoped that this will continue as Bristol strive to fight their way back into Premiership rugby.

The season kicks off on Saturday 12th September when we host Kirkham Grammar School from Lancashire (2-30pm k.o.) and a good win will be needed to ensure that we move on to Sedbergh, the following week, in the right frame of mind.
