Over 65,000 pupils from across the UK sat the Senior Maths Challenge with roughly the top 6% receiving a gold certificate, the next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze.

Nick Mugridge is one of approximately 1,000 of the top students who are eligible to represent the UK at the International Mathematical Olympiad invited to sit the follow-on competition, the British Mathematical Olympiad Round one on 2nd December.

The Senior Maths Challenge is run by the UK Mathematics Trust and aimed at those aged 16-19 and is sat in schools.

The UK Mathematics Trust is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. It organises competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for UK secondary school pupils. Further information about the Trust and its activities is available at www.ukmt.org.uk

Sample questions from this year’s Senior Maths Challenge include:

• The year 2010 is one in which the sum of its digits is a factor of the year itself. How many more years will it be before this is next the case?

• A notice on Morecombe promenade reads: “It would take 20 million years to fill Morecombe Bay from a bath tap”. Assuming that the flow from the bath tap is 6 litres a minute, what does the notice imply is the approximate capacity of Morecombe Bay in litres?

• There are 120 different arrangements of the five letters in the word ANGLE. If all 120 are listed in alphabetical order starting with AEGLN and finishing with NLGEA, which position in the list does ANGLE occupy?
