Work Experience June 2009
Year 10 pupils returned last week, tired but happy, from a week experiencing the pleasures of work!
Each June, after their exams finish, Year 10 pupils spend a week in a placement of their choice to find out more about the world of work and perhaps “test out” a career interest.
They have been trying out work in a huge variety of areas – from solicitors’ offices, veterinary practices and hospital laboratories to gyms and music shops. Their placements included Airbus and Rolls Royce, Aardman Animation, RAF Benson and the Bristol Magistrates’ Court.
Some of our more adventurous pupils have been as far afield as London to find out more about the work of the Refugee Council, to explore careers in publishing at Puffin Books and to find out more about fashion buying at George. One very adventurous spirit even went to Valencia in Spain to work in a language school.
Hannah Hughes BRI Labs
My placement was in the labs at the BRI and I got to visit all the different areas that make up the labs. I was able to test blood samples for blood type and I also watched organs being dissected to find cancers and tumours. I really enjoyed the experience working at the BRI and found it very interesting and am now quite interested in finding out more about Bio-chemistry as a possible career.

Tom Mirnezami at Davidson Smith Dental Practice
I really enjoyed my week. It was a fantastic blend of business with practical and academic work. I spent time with 6 different dentists, a dental hygienist and the practice manager I enjoyed seeing how the business works and saw everything – from profits to practice and patients. It was a nice working environment and I liked meeting the patients and watching the public interface

Toby Morris at Rowe Vet Group
I really enjoyed my placement, once I had overcome my apprehension at going in the first morning not knowing anyone. I think work experience is a great idea – it gives you the opportunity to go into an adult work environment and to see if you like that occupation. I did! I learnt that I can go into a new environment and cope and gained experience of a medical environment and found I could cope with the sight of blood etc!
