Colston's win the first Rugby 7s competition of the season

Colston's champions

This weekend at Taunton Colston’s set off on the trial to defend their title as national Rugby 7s champions. In a difficult competition at the West of England and Wales Tournament on Sunday 2nd March they pulled off their first win of the season in a competition they have rarely excelled in.

They sailed through their opening pool matches against Truro (40-0), Monmouth (55-0) and Kelly College (45-0) but had to overcome stiff opposition against King’s College Taunton on their home ground (21-10) to reach the final stages of this competition which were played at Taunton RFC.

Colston’s looked all too nonchalant in the semi final against Christ College Brecon and conceded two early tries. However, a Colston’s try just before half time kept them in the game. In the second half Colston’s swept Brecon aside to secure a 29-10 win and a place in the final against an impressive looking Millfield team.

Although they again went behind to a converted Millfield try Colston’s stepped up to the mark and put in a coruscating performance to knock Millfield off their stride. Colston’s then scored three tries to take a seemingly unassailable lead before Millfield responded with a further try. Colston’s held their 17-12 lead for the last few moments of an exciting and worthy final.

This was an impressive start to the 7s campaign to which everyone in the squad contributed.
