VISIT TO COLSTON’S BY KATE LEE

On Friday 28 November Kate Lee, an actress turned Performance Coach, visited Colston’s to talk to pupils about self presentation and interview preparation.

She gave a very lively and informative presentation to Year 10 pupils who seemed particularly to enjoy the role playing aspects of the talk. They should now have a good idea of how to present themselves – whether in public or at an interview. This information should be especially useful for those who have interviews next year for their work experience placements.

Kate also talked to the Sixth Form about interviews and presentation techniques and provided a most entertaining as well as informative General Studies session.

In the afternoon Kate gave some interview tips to those students expecting University interviews and conducted brief mock interviews which caused some hilarity as well as proving very useful!

Colston’s clearly enjoyed the visit from Kate Lee and we hope to see her again next year.

1ST XV NEWS

At the weekend they maintained their unbeaten run by securing a 17-10 victory in a tense and exciting match against Blackrock College in Dublin and on Tuesday they moved into the 6th Round of the Daily Mail Cup by defeating Pangbourne College 34-10 in Berkshire. All the news of the season can be found on the Rugby Web Site.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR AT COLSTON'S

Congratulations to two members of staff at Colston's who are marrying each other on Saturday 30th November. Ms Alexandra Marshall (French and Spanish) and Mr Barry Van Selm (Business Studies and ICT) met here at Colston's. They will also exchange their vows again at a ceremony in Cape Town in the Christmas holidays. A number of colleagues will be joining them in Cape Town for this ceremony.

The first some pupils heard of their wedding plans was on seeing their car decorated for the special occasion.

CONCORDE'S FINAL FLIGHT

Pupils in the Lower School were able to watch Concorde fly past the school on its way to make its final landing at Filton.

LEPRA WORKOUT

Some 40 pupils from Years 7 and 8 took part in a workout on Tuesday 25th November 2003. Another 25 did not take part but still raised money for the Lepra Charity.

Of this number over 20 pupils raised more than £21 each. This small amount of money is enough to cure someone of Leprosy. The total money raised exceeded £900, and is another excellent effort from the pupils at Colston`s School.

BLOOD WEDDING

This year’s Year 11 production is Blood Wedding by Federico Garcia Lorca. It will start at 7.30p.m. at the Harry Crook Theatre, Colston’s School on Wednesday 19, Thursday 20 and Friday 21 November. Doors open at 7.00 p.m.

Based on a true story of love, lust, and betrayal, Blood Wedding is one of the most powerful and innovative plays of the twentieth century. Federico Garcia Lorca wrote his best known play years after reading a newspaper account of a young bride in Andalusia who abandoned her husband-to-be on their wedding day to escape with her childhood sweetheart. Lorca evokes the spectacle of human passion through sophisticated and often surrealistic poetic technique, elevating the love story to a tragedy of fate.

We will be complementing Lorca’s classic of world theatre with stunning physical theatre and imaginative, unusual staging. A very talented cast and crew are sure to entertain you with this beautiful and timeless play.

COLSTON'S PARENTS' SOCIETY 2003/4 CHALLENGE

So what is "The Colston’s Collegiate 2003/4 Challenge"?

Over three months, three sets of obscure and difficult quiz questions will be published on the Colston’s website (or posted to anyone who does not have access to the internet.)

It is not a ‘General Knowledge’ quiz with answers which are easy to come by. It is a Research Quiz where the answers are obscure and sometimes very specific knowledge will be required to produce the answers.

Each month 10 rounds will be published, each with 10 questions per round. Running through the answers for each group of 10 will be a hidden link. It will be necessary to establish the link to gain full marks for the group of questions.

The enjoyment to be gained from this quiz is in the need to organise the appropriate research. This is why a month is given for the completion of each round. The answers are e-mailed to a dedicated e-mail address by the appropriate deadline.

There will be a £10 entry fee per team and teams will need to register by e-mailing an application form to Mick Hubbard and he will confirm their acceptance and tell them where to send their entry fee.

The first round of questions will be published on the website in December, the second round in January and the third in February. A final round for the leading teams will be held in March with no access to books or the Internet!

THE NEXT GENERATION OF RUGBY REFEREES

On Thursday 16 October, Richard Glynne-Jones, Panel Development Manager of the Rugby Football Union fronted up a presentation to pupils from Years 10, 11 and the Sixth Form at Colston’s, along with Ed Morrison the well known world class rugby referee.
The purpose of the presentation was to launch a new initiative to try to encourage more youngsters to take up refereeing whilst continuing to play the game. In this way Richard Glynn-Jones hopes to develop a new generation of young referees who will be capable of refereeing at the highest level.
Following the presentation twenty one boys and five girls volunteered to enroll on the new refereeing course, and they had their first meeting on Wednesday 22nd October.
Colston’s 1st XV won the St. Joseph’s Festival for the third successive year at the week-end, and it is to hoped that at least some of this batch of budding referees will make it to the top level too.

NEW SPORTING FACILITIES AT COLSTON'S

Thanks to the generosity of the Society of Merchant Venturers Colston's Collegiate School and Colston’s Girls’ School will now be able to enjoy the use of a floodlit Astroturf hockey pitch and six floodlit tennis/netball courts at Stapleton.

An old changing room has also been renovated to provide changing and shower facilities for girls, and a new car park will allow the expected increase in spectators to park with ease.

HEADMASTERS' AND HEADMISTRESSES' CONFERENCE

The Headmaster, Mr. David Crawford, recently attended the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference in Dublin. He writes here about his experiences on the four day conference.

1st XV CONTINUE TO IMPRESS

Colston's 1st XV won the 17th Annual National Schools' Rugby Festival at St Joseph's College, Ipswich this weekend for the third successive year. This festival has become without doubt one of the premier rugby tournaments within the schoolboy calendar with 16 of the top schoolboy teams from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales taking part. Colston's have now won this event on six occasions.

Colston's were unbeaten over the two days and did not even concede a try in the whole competition. In pool games on Saturday they had wins over Bradford Grammar, Monmouth and Brighton College. On Sunday, in a second pool for the winners and runners-up from Saturday, Colston's defeated Blackrock College Dublin, RGS High Wycombe and Millfield. Then in an exciting and tense final they defeated Ivybridge Community College from Devon 15-3.

SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENING PACKS THEM IN

The school theatre was packed last Thursday evening for the Sixth Form Open Evening. After songs from Louise Milne and Matthew Jelf, the audience heard from the Headmaster, David Crawford, who talked about issues which had arisen during the HMC conference from which he had only just returned, and the Director of the Sixth Form, Gerard Boyce, introduced four members of the Upper Sixth- Paul Martinovic, Lydia Hillary, Dan Shuker and Louise Milne- who talked about their experiences at the school and how much they recommended it.

After that, parents and pupils- including several visitors from other schools- visited departments and spoke to subject teachers and to students currently following the courses. It looks very likely that the sixth form next September will yet again reach record numbers

INDIAN SUMMER

Lots of pupils, parents and friends have been enjoying watching sports fixtures in the beautiful surroundings at Colston's in the last few weeks.

TIMETABLE CHANGE

On Thursday 16th October both the Upper and Lower School will operate on a Friday timetable and then on Friday 17th October everyone will operate on a Thursday timetable. This is being done to minimise disruption to lessons which is caused by the number of extra-curricular activities which take place on Fridays this term.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO THE MENDIPS

As part of their GCSE Rocks course 55 Year 10 Geographers and 4 staff ventured onto the Mendips for a day on Thursday 25th September. During the morning they had a guided tour of Wookey Hole caves where they experienced Caverns and Stalactites first hand. Having safely navigated the network of underground chambers we then went onto the largest limestone quarry in Europe. A huge hole in the ground, visible from satellite and two miles long (nearly). Emphasis was placed on the environmental issues surrounding quarrying and the students received an excellent talk from the Educational Officer. The day proved to be a great success with stark made contrasts between the natural and human landscapes of the Mendips

OPEN MORNING

On Saturday 27th September the school was open to prospective boys and girls and their parents. There were two presentations by the Headmaster, Mr David Crawford, in the Theatre. Young guides showed people around the school. There were opportunities to visit all the academic Departments and to talk to boys, girls and staff.

1st XV PILE UP THE MILES AND THE POINTS

The school's 1st XV has started the season in scintillating form. Following the fourth successive win in the Tynedale International Schools' Tournament in Northumberland, there have been wins against St Peter's High School, Gloucester (54-0), Kirkham Grammar School from Lancashire (49-3) and on Tuesday 23rd September against Ivybridge Community College in Devon (13-12). Colston's are yet to concede a try this season in all matches. There are additional matches for both 1st and 2nd XV's on Friday 26th September at Cleve RFC at 7.00 p.m. against Brighton College. Full reports and photos on Colston's Rugby Web.

YEAR 11 GEOGRAPHY FIELD COURSE TO NETTLECOMBE COURT 12th-13th SEPTEMBER

57 Geography students and four staff spent two days in north Somerset gathering primary data for their forthcoming GCSE projects. Fantastic weather and first class tuition from the Field Studies Centre at Nettlecombe Court resulted in some excellent data being collected. The students doing the physical project work were based at Porlock Bay collecting beach data and pebble measurements. The Human project was centred around Minehead, where students completed a land use survey and environmental quality assessment. After two intensive days the students returned to school and are now processing their results. Individual projects have to be completed by Christmas. Many thanks go to Mr Eyles, Dr Dawson, Mrs Brighton and Mrs Marshall.

INDIVIDUAL PHOTOS

All pupils had individual photos taken on Monday 15th September. Pupils were at their smartest. In a few weeks time the finished product should arrive at school. Pupils can take them home and parents will be given the opportunity to purchase them via the school from the photographers Gilman and Soame.

FIT STAFF

Seven members of staff took part in the recent Bristol BUPA Half Marathon. The four displaying their medals here are Mr Darren Wall, Mrs Clare Hambley, Mr John Fitzpatrick and Miss Elizabth Doran. The others to complete the half marathon were Mr Graham Ricketts, Mr David Betterton and Mrs Nikki Paterson.

ENGLAND RUGBY JUNIOR NATIONAL ACADEMY

Tom Varndell-Dawes and Warren Fury, both members of the school's 1st XV, have been selected as members of the England Rugby Junior National Academy. The Junior National Academy has been set up to identify players who have the potential to represent England at the senior level. Their selection is most prestigious, especially as only 16 players have been selected from across the country.

SECOND SUCCESSIVE FIRST

For the second year running an Old Colstonian has been awarded a First Class degree from Imperial College London, one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Last year it was Mark Levy, this year it is Lin Lee. We congratulate her on this magnificent achievement and wish her luck with her PhD, which she will be starting at Imperial in a year’s time after a well-earned break from her studies.

And who knows- she may be emulated by her sister, Mei Lee, who has just started A2s after achieving 5 grade As at AS level this summer.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Congratulations to Hazel Lewis who has received an Allied Irish Bank Scholarship to study Accounting & Early Childhood Studies at the University of the West of England.

Hazel was awarded this for showing significant personal development and demonstrating enthusiasm for, and contribution to, the Higher Education Guidance programme during her Sixth Form.

We wish her every success in her degree and for the future.

VALUE ADDED

As part of a national programme to measure value-added performance in schools Year 7 pupils took a series of short tests last week. The MidYIS Test is designed to provide a baseline measurement of each pupil's ability on entry to Colston's. These results can then be compared with later results gained at Key Stage 3 and GCSE, enabling a value-added measurement to be made. In a pilot scheme run in 2001 Colston's "value added" placed us 3rd in the National League Table.

1st XV RETAIN TYNEDALE CUP

Colston's won the Tynedale International Schools' Rugby Festival for the 4th consecutive year on Sunday 7th September beating Barnard Castle in the final.

Colston's won all six of their matches and did not concede a point. Click here for details of the results and scorers.

OPEN MORNING

On Saturday September 27th the school will be open from 10.00 a.m. until 1.00 p.m. for prospective pupils and their parents to look around. Pupil guides will be available and there will be displays of work in a variety of classrooms. There will be two Headmaster's Presentations in the Harry Crook Theatre, one at 10.10 a.m. and the other at 11.30 a.m. During the presentations pupils will explain what they have done in the school and how they have benefited from a Colston's education. We look forward to seeing you.

NEW TERM

Year 7 pupils on their first day at Colston's
The Autumn Term begins today (2nd September) with 95 Year 7 pupils joining the school. There are nearly 600 pupils on roll in the Upper School and just under 300 in the Lower School and Nursery.

Lower Sixth pupils are out of school until Wednesday afternoon on an Induction Programme at Caerleon in South Wales.

SIXTH FORMERS MAKE THE GRADE!

Colston's Sixth Formers were delighted with their A-level results this summer and all who wished to go to University have secured places. Many others will be entering University in 2004 following gap years of varying degrees of enterprise and recklessness.

Notable successes include: Gareth Jacobs who secured his place at Oxford University; Jonathan Poole who becomes our first successful applicant for a number of years to the LSE; and Ankit Desai, Alex Coombs, Hannah Coller and Daniel Vaughan who will all be attending medical schools.

We wish them and all our other applicants to University every success in the future.
