Double success for Colston’s team at public speaking competition

The Colston’s School team won two trophies at Bristol Rotary Club’s annual Schools Public Speaking Competition.

Nicola Clark (Year 11) was voted best Chair, and she and her team-mates Leon Hubbard and Sarah Hartles were runners-up in the team section.

Leon spoke on ‘How not to lose your head when all about are losing theirs’, and Sarah gave the vote of thanks.

The summariser, former Clifton High Head Mrs J Walters, said that the Colston’s team had made made “an impressive presentation”, and were “very clear, articulate, powerful and confident.”

Air cadets get their first taste of gliding

Colston’s CCF arranged for eight Year 10 air cadets to have a day’s gliding at Hullavington with three launches each.

It was the first time that Adeel Nadeen, Matt Bennett, Peter Jewkes, Amy Nommeots-Nomm, Josh Robson-Hemmings and Alfonso Tallo had been in a glider, and the second time for Talcott Brockhurst and Fran Roe.

Good luck to Nicola Clark (Year 11) who has been awarded a gliding scholarship for a week’s training course during the Easter holidays. Nicky goes on her course with one day’s gliding and three launches under her belt.

Science Club members compete in Salters Festival at Bristol University

Having won a first prize last year, Colston’s again entered the Salters Festival of Chemistry at Bristol University.

Four Year 7 Science Club members Isaac Palmer, Kristian Joslin, Duncan Windsor and Tom Pearce tackled unseen tests.

They were not among the trophies this year, but achieved a high standard in their subjects – forensic science and the chemical clock.

COLSTON’S NAMES NEW CHAIRMAN OF GOVERNORS

David Marsh takes over as new Chairman of Governors as numbers hit record levels.

David Marsh, one of Bristol’s leading corporate finance lawyers, takes over at the beginning of the summer term as Chairman of the Governors of Colston’s School during one of the most successful periods in its 294-year history.
By the start of the autumn term in September pupil numbers will have edged over the 600-mark for the first time as a result of four-form entry working its way through the school.

“We went from three-form to four-form entry five years ago” said Mr Marsh, “and from September we will be at full capacity within our existing facilities.

“Demand is rising, and a record 220 young people sat the Upper School entrance examinations in January. But we retain our policy of keeping class sizes at a maximum of 23 in the core subjects from Years 7 to 11.”

Mr Marsh succeeds Roger Smedley who took over a year ago from Brigadier Hugh Pye, the Chairman at Colston’s for nine years.

“We’re concerned with driving up standards in all aspects of school life, and that’s where I aim to continue the work of Hugh Pye and Roger Smedley,” Mr Marsh continued. “Solid academic achievement provides the foundation and impetus for an ever-widening range of activities at Colston’s.

“This rising level of interest is a tribute to an enthusiastic and sustained performance by the entire staff at the Upper and Lower Schools. The Governors recognise the coherence and continuity which David Crawford has achieved during his nine years as Headmaster.

“As Head, David has laid very solid foundations for the school’s continued growth and development over the coming years.”

Mr Marsh comes from a Bristol family which moved to Yorkshire. He went to Oxford University, and after working for five years in law in the City of London he joined Bristol’s Burges Salmon in 1971.

He became a partner there the following year, and has advised on the structure and financing mechanisms for many different types of businesses. He is a member of the Association of Partnership Practitioners.

He is President of Bristol Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of Business West and a Member of the Society of Merchant Venturers.

He is also a director of a number of trading companies and of @Bristol Limited.

“I actually retire from Burges Salmon at the end of April,” he added, “and this will enable me to spend more time on this important role at Colston’s, building on the valuable work done by predecessors like Hugh Pye and Roger Smedley over recent years.

“As it approaches its 300th anniversary Colston’s faces an exciting future - and excitement is running high at the moment as the school prepares for its next trip to Twickenham for another Daily Mail Cup Final next Saturday.

“I shall be with the hundreds of Colston’s pupils, parents and supporters who will be there on the day. For all of us who love sport, the school’s record over recent years has been an inspiration.”

Footballers reach quarter-finals

Now it’s getting serious – Colston’s Lower School are into the quarter-finals of Bristol’s Coronation Cup seven-a-side competition, following an excellent 2-0 home win over St Mary Redcliffe.

The Upper School adapted one of the rugby pitches for the junior encounter. Colston’s scorers were Ian Clark, whose swivel and shot deceived the visiting defence, and captain George Lloyd whose solo effort clinched the tie.

Team coach Geoff Stock said: “We are grateful to the Upper School for adapting Pitch 4 for our needs, and the boys are now waiting to see who they play in the last eight.

“We reached the semi-finals in 1999, so there’s a real incentive for this team to go at least one step further.”

Sixth form vote shows what pupils need when planning for university

The sixth form at Colston’s School have demonstrated their top needs when planning university entrance.

Head of Careers Gill Dann asked them how they would like to prioritise preparation for higher education – both in topics covered and course delivery.

This is how they voted:
Topics

1 What admissions tutors need to know in personal statements

2 How to choose a university course
3 The applications procedure
4 How to choose a the university itself
5 The pros and cons of going to university
6= Presentation skills and interview techniques
6= Gap year opportunities
8= University life – what to expect
8= Mock interviews
10 How to use careers resources (including books, websites and computer programs)
11 CVs
12 Study skills and time management
13 Alternatives to university

Delivery

1 Individual guidance

2 Using careers library resources

3 Talks in GS (Guidance Studies? Gill can you confirm what this is)

4 Programme delivered partly off-site

5 Programme delivered in block sessions in school
6 Programme delivered in General Studies lessons

The results of this survey were incorporated into the programme designed for a group of 75 from Colston’s sixth form when they went to Cardiff University for a one-day higher education conference.

They attended lectures on ‘An introduction to higher education’ and ‘UCAS and applying to university’, and also toured the university and students union.

“This is the first time we have set up a group session of this type at a university, and we were very pleased with the results,” said Gill Dann.

“Cardiff did not approach it in any sense as a recruitment exercise. They don’t need to recruit.

“They offered the conference as a genuine introduction to HE. In fact they would have come to us to do it, but we felt it would be of much greater benefit to go to them.

“They would have liked more contact with university students during the day, so we will remember that next time.”

The same group from Colston’s sixth form attended a higher education fair at Bath University on March 18th.

COLSTON'S CHALLENGE

Thanks to all those who took the time to enter. We had some entries which were near perfect and must have taken quite some time to research. And that was the key to the Challenge - it was something to team up with friends to solve, so that you each took only some of the sets of questions. Anyway, for those of you who are still puzzling over what it was all about, here are the answers we were looking for. We may run another challenge next year....and if we do, just remember you don't have to be able to answer all of the questions to send in an entry.

CHILCOTT DEALS THE KNOCK-OUT BLOW AS FUNDRAISING DINNER BRINGS IN £10,000 FOR AUSTRALIAN RUGBY TOUR

None of the speakers pulled their punches at an uproarious fundraising dinner in support of Colston’s School rugby tour of Australia in the summer.

The 350-strong audience had England (and former Colston’s) coach Andy Robinson, England scrum-half Kyran Bracken and former England lock Martin Bayfield just about level on points as the speeches ended.

But Gareth Chilcott, our auctioneer for the event, delivered a sudden knock-out in the final round when he raised bids to a staggering £2500 for a boxing glove signed by nine world champions.

By the time Gareth threw in the towel – at around midnight – the auction had raised £6,000, taking the total proceeds of the evening above £10,000.

Teachers and parents have joined forces to raise money for the Australian tour, and the fundraising programme included the dinner at the City Centre Marriott Hotel, Bristol, on February 24th.

A tour party of 45 boys, including the present Colston’s 1st and 2nd XVs, will tour Australia in July and August. They will play four games at 1st and 2nd levels against schools in Queensland and New South Wales, and will also play a New South Wales state side.

Andy Robinson trained as a sports master, teaching at King Edward School in Bath and then Colston’s from 1994-96. He won eight caps for England and the British Lions, and became head coach at Bath after his teaching post at Colston’s.

In welcoming guests to the dinner, Colston’s head David Crawford paid tribute to the friends and supporters who had put the event together.

Deputy head Alan Martinovic, who is responsible for the school’s rugby, reported that an unprecedented 14 current pupils had been selected for England junior squads at recent trials.

The six Daily Mail Cups which Colston’s won from 1995 to 2000 were on display. The school meet the Royal Grammar School, Lancaster in the semi-finals of this season’s Daily Mail Cup in Wolverhampton on March 6th for the right to play in the final at Twickenham on April 3rd.

LANGUAGE GROUP IN BARCELONA

They were promised role-play to accelerate their Spanish, and that’s what they got. A group of 23 Colston’s pupils went to Barcelona during half term, and Simon Jenkins is pictured getting an early taste of Spanish shopping.

The group was led by Head of Modern Languages Denise Currie accompanied by Judy Brighton (Senior Mistress) and Ed Moon (History). Ed is also in the picture.

Mrs Brighton said: “The only worrying moment was when a member of the public came up to me after we got off the plane in Barcelona and asked if I was anything to do with that school party. When I cautiously asked why, he said he just wanted to compliment someone on their impeccable behaviour.”

Mrs Currie added: “I have never seen a better behaved group on a school trip, and they all gained confidence in their conversational Spanish.”

James Phillips has also made the U16 England squad.

Ryan Owen has also represented Wales U18 this year and we await news of boys who are going for Ireland international caps.

COME ON YOU HOBBOIDS

The staff at Colston’s Lower have thrown down a challenge to their ‘hobbily challenged’ pupils.

Last year’s prototype Hobbies Day was a great success, with more than a quarter of all pupils exhibiting, and as a result a second – and hopefully bigger – ‘Hobbiday’ has been fixed for March 11th.

Event organisers Will Barber and Naomi Whitaker have come up with a range of helpful suggestions for those struggling to switch off the TV – including the range on show last year:

• Models – kits and radio-controlled
• Craft work – stamps, coins, rocks, sticks, cards, dolls
• Cookery – cakes or biscuits “and method of construction”
• Pets – small herbivores favoured; large carnivores discouraged
• Photos – of activities like horse riding, jousting, hill walking, canoeing, lumberjacking (bring equipment too)
• Other – woodwork, sketching, painting, computers, gardening, West African miniature aquatic figurine painting (where did that come from?)

“I have a feeling this is quickly building momentum,” said Will. “Nobody would really want to be left out, and I want the place filled to overflowing on the day with favourite creations and collectables. Come on you hobboids!”

"SCHOOL IN ACTION" BREAKS NEW GROUND

Plans are well under way for ‘School in Action’, an open morning at Colston’s Lower on March 19th when prospective parents are invited to see exactly what happens on a typical day.

“Staff will teach their normal timetable,” School Head Caroline Aspden said, “and Year 6 pupils will be given the task of acting as guides – showing visitors the Nursery School, Pre-Prep Department and Junior Department.

“We will be open to visitors from 9.30 – 11.30, and we hope parents can stop for a coffee and a chat at the end of their tour.

“Traditionally the Lower School has had a Saturday Open Day in September along with the Upper School, but ‘School in Action’ is a new venture for us.”

HALF TERM SKIERS HEAD FOR ITALY

Fifty-one pupils from the Junior Department at Colston’s Lower School and Year 7 in the Upper School will spend half term on the ski slopes. Six staff will supervise the party in the Italian resort of Aprica.

Pam Webley, who will be on her 11th successive Colston’s ski trip, heads the group.

“We do the whole thing by bus,” she said. “We drive off from the school at mid-day on Saturday (February 14th) and are due back about mid afternoon the following Sunday (February 22nd).”

COLSTON'S CHALLENGE UPDATE

Due to a number of requests that there has not been sufficient time to complete entries for the first round, the Parents’ Society has decided to relaunch the Colston’s Challenge but extend the date for completion of the first round.. There is now no entry fee to take part, which it is hoped may encourage any of you who were in two minds because of the cost of taking part. It is now just for fun. The first round questions are available under the Parents’ Society link.

Please note that the closing date for entries is now 28th February 2004. The answers to this round together with the round 2 questions will be posted on the website shortly after. It is intended to publish the third and final round of questions on the website at the end of March with the closing date for the Challenge being around the end of April.

COLSTON'S MAKE QUARTER FINALS OF DAILY MAIL CUP

On Wednesday 21st January the 1st XV, really well supported by a large and enthusiastic home crowd, reached the quarter-finals of the Daliy Mail Cup with an impressive 43-13 win against St Peter's High School from Gloucester.

MORE SUCCESS FOR SQUASH TEAM

Another good victory for the squash team. In a very even contest Colston’s eventually came out the winners. Monkton Combe fought hard and won a couple of excellent games. However, good performances from Grant Blackwell, Ken Chen and Peter Clark meant that Colston’s claimed their second victory of the season.
Match Scores:
Nikki Clark: 0-3; Grant Blackwell: 3-1; Sam Leung: 1-3; Ken Chen: 3-0; Peter Clark: 3-0; Ashley Hirbar-Green: 3-1.

TOM CARPENTER - CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPION

On Saturday 17th January the Avon Schools Cross-Country Championships were held at Whitchurch. Hopes were high for Tom Carpenter in Year 9 in the Junior Boys event. Tom competes regularly for Westbury Harriers and was National Prep School Champion for 1500m in Year 7. Having won the Bristol Schools event before Christmas Tom entered the race in confident mood.
Facing 40 runners from N.Somerset, BANES and South Gloucester Tom soon established a comfortable lead and looked more comfortable as the race went on. He finished well ahead of his nearest rival and can now look forward to running in the National Championships later this term. Sophie Baber (Year 7) came third in the Minor Girls event.

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY HONOURS

Congratulations to Tom Varndell-Dawes, who was capped for England Under 19 v Scotland on Friday 16th January. Tom scored a try in England's 37-13 victory.

A number of other boys are doing well in attempting to gain international honours. Warren Fury will play in the next England U19 game.

Kevin Davis, Chris Brooker, Jordan Crane, Josh Nowak, Shane Geraghty, Ryan Davis, Ollie Mansbridge have all been selected for the U18 (September) Elite England Development Group.

Chris Bush, Rory Sloan, Callum Black, Robert Boles are in the Ireland Youth squad.

GOVERNMENT PERFORMANCE TABLES

The Government Performance Tables have been published this week. You can access them online - The BBC Website is a good place to look.

The Headmaster comments on them:

"The Government GCSE performance tables published yesterday continue to be flawed, as the figures include all pupils in a school who are 15 years of age regardless of whether they sat the GCSE examinations or not. 3% of pupils in Year 11 last year were ‘out of age’ and they were recorded as having sat and failed every subject at GCSE! What a nonsense; this could only happen in England. The same distortion affects the value added figures too.
Despite this bias, we were very pleased with the performance of last year’s Year 11 and Upper Sixth pupils. They had worked hard throughout the year and deserved the high grades they achieved as shown in ‘archived news’ on the web site."

SQUASH

Colston’s achieved their first squash victory in a while with a win over Clifton College. A great effort from a team mainly composed of Year 10. The scores were:
Peter Aldrich 3-1; Peter Clark 3-1; Ken Chen 0-3; Grant Blackwell 3-0; Sam Leung 0-3; Ashley Hribar-Green 3-1

LOWER SIXTH SWITCHED ON TO ELECTRONICS

After the successful introduction of Psychology via Distance learning in September 2002, we were keen to add Electronics to the sixth form curriculum this year. The problem of providing a suitable location for the practical work was solved due to the generosity of the Physics department, who donated space within the Science Block.

The students report that the course is “very enjoyable…a refreshing change from more traditional courses.” Whilst there is a lot to take in during the one hour video-conferencing style lesson, the tutor is “very friendly…and we know exactly what is required of us.” The students are clearly responding well to the challenge and responsibility of doing so much work on their own.

Distance Learning is now well established at Colston’s, with large numbers of Year 11 students wishing to take up Psychology next year. Maybe in a few more years all lessons will be delivered through this method…

Congratulations to Oxbridge candidates

In recent years Colston’s School pupils have enjoyed a great deal of success in gaining entry to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. We are very pleased that after intensive interviews two of our students have been offered places for next September: Samantha Low, to read Chemistry at Brasenose College Oxford; and Robert Lee, to read History at Corpus Christi College Cambridge. Both will need to achieve top grades in their A2 exams this summer but we have every confidence they will be joining the 10 Old Colstonians currently studying at these prestigious universities. We wish them the best of luck with their studies this year.

Coming soon ... Colston’s Rugby Calendar for Australia Tour 2004

Following the success of last year’s Sixth Form Rugby Boys’ Calendar, it is back by popular demand! As you read this the calendars are being formatted and printed (thanks to Kallkwik Printing Company) ready for sale at the beginning of the new school term. So make sure you save that Christmas gift money to purchase your copy in The Bishop’s Palace where they will be sold by the stars of the calendar themselves! We hope with your help this year’s project will be as, if not more, successful than the previous one in its effort to raise money for the Australia Rugby Tour in the summer of 2004.
