Skiing is proving more popular than ever at Colston's. This Easter a party of more than 60 boys and girls skied in Saalbach in Austria. Pictured above are the top medal winners of the week, brother and sister Kieran and Kerry Bogira along with James Dickie. Kieran and Kerry Bogira had a hectic few weeks at Easter. As members of the Gloucester Ski team they also took part in races in Scotland the weekend before the ski trip and then went straight from Saalbach to Val Thorens in France for more competitions.
Next year's school ski trip at Easter, to Tignes in France, is already fully booked. A Sixth Form trip is also planned for the February half term. Details are available from Mr Mason (pictured here in Saalbach) at school.

MR COLSTON'S HOSPITAL

The Society of Merchant Venturers has recently published the history of Colston's. Written by Dr John Wroughton, a Governor of Colston's since 1993, this is the first ever history of the school.

This is the remarkable story of the hospital school set up in the centre of Bristol in 1710 for 100 poor boys by the philanthropist, Edward Colston. It describes the shool's chequered history throughout the eighteenth and nineteeth centuries - its harsh conditions, brutal floggings, meagre diet, incompetent masters and brittle finances - before charting its move to Stapleton in 1861 and its subsequent transformation into one of the west country's leading independent schools.
The life of the pupils is vividly portrayed - brought into focus by the series of personal reminiscences - as is the vital contribution made by individual Headmasters and the Society of Old Colstonians. Central to the book, however, is the crucial role of the Society of Merchant Venturers which, as trustee of Colston's endowment, has faithfully managed and supported the school for almost 300 years.

Copies of the book are available from The Bursary, Colston's Collegiate School, Stapleton, Bristol BS16 1BJ at the special introductory price of £14.95 (cheques payable to Colston's Collegiate School).

YEAR 8 FRENCH TRIP TO NORMANDY

Mrs Marshall from the Modern Languages Department led a party of 24 boys and girls from Year 8 on a visit to Normandy over the May Bank holiday weekend. She was accompanied by Mr Drew and Mr Tayler. There were visits to Honfleur, the Bayeux Tapestry and to the D Day landing museums at Arromanches. As well as the cultural visits there were plenty of opportunities to take part in leisure activities.
