WORK EXPERIENCE 2003

Year 10 have just returned from a week’s work experience.
A wide variety of work placements were covered – including , engineering, law, architecture, leisure centres, animal rescue, hotels and medical physics.
The pupils seem to have enjoyed their week and have often found out more about a particular career area of interest to them. They have also had a taste of the world of work and all that goes with it – perhaps using public transport, being reliable and punctual, asking questions and generally working with adults. Certainly their confidence has improved as they found their way in what must have seemed an unsettling environment for some.
Colston’s is very grateful to the large number of Employers who give so generously of their time to develop such interesting programmes of work for the young people.

Theresa Jones writes of her work experience:
"Work experience is an opportunity for all year 10 pupils to experience working life for five days. We each independently chose what aspects of work we would like to be involved in and we each had a range of things we wanted to get out of work experience.
I chose Proteus Marketing Communications, which is a graphic design company situated in Redcliffe. They are mainly involved in advertising and marketing for companies such as Lloyds and The Royal Bank of Scotland. I have always been interested in this line of work, which involves both technical and creative skills.

Theresa Jones on work experience at Proteus Marketing Communications

Over the course of the five days, I had a taster of many aspects of the company. I put together a portfolio, which contained two creative briefs. I designed a variety of products and thought up advertising ideas using creative and I.T. skills. I found Proteus to have a friendly working environment and all of the staff I met were extremely helpful and welcoming. They were always willing to explain what their line of work involved and I learnt a lot from them.
This was a valuable experience for me, as I was able to apply my existing creative skills, and learn new and useful I.T. skills. Many others in year 10 have shared my positive reflection of this week. We were able to experience working life; practise a range of skills, and in most cases display independence. It helped me to decide what kind of job I would like in the future and what path my education should take.
Many schools do not have this option; so younger years should be encouraged to make the most out of this opportunity. It has been a valuable and enjoying experience."

MEET "THE GAPPIES"

The "Gappies", Stephen Lilley, Alisdair Muller and Rosie Thom on camp in Wales at Half Term

Each year Colston’s receives Gap Year Students from the Southern Hemisphere. This year we have three “Gappies”. They introduce themselves:

Alisdair Muller – I’m from Johannesburg in South Africa. I’m 18 years old. My hobbies include music, art and sport. I attended a boys’ school in Johannesburg. I was involved in everything I could be. I will be doing a general BA next year at university.

Stephen Lilley – I’m from Johannesburg in South Africa. I spent the last five years in a very sports orientated boys’ school, so I play most sports. I play the guitar and enjoy music. Art is also one of my main interests and I hope to study Design at university next year.

Rosie Thom – G’day. I’m from a small country town in Australia called Yanrawonga in Victoria. I love all sports especially netball and tennis. I also enjoy music and play the flute and piano. When I return to Australia in December I am going to study Physiotherapy at university.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF THE COLLEGIATE SCHOOL

Old Girls and Friends of the former Collegiate School met at Colston's Collegiate School on Sunday 27th April 2003 for a celebratory luncheon to mark the centenary of the Collegiate School which was founded in Clarendon Road, Redland, in 1903 by three sisters, Florence, Dora and Susannah Adams.

To mark this special occasion a book has been published entitled "One Hundred Years of the Collegiate School", copies of which can be obtained from the Headmaster's Secretary at Colston's Collegiate School.

SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS OVER!

Pupils in Years 7 to 10 have been sitting their annual school examinations. Once the examinations are over there is a varied programme of activities to relax. Year 10 pupils have a week of Work Experience (see below), Year 9 pupils have a short CCF Camp and Years 7 and 8 have two days of varied activities.

The first activity for Year 7 pupils was a morning ramble discovering the local area on Purdown and in the Frome Valley.

WORK EXPERIENCE FOR YEAR 10

On Monday 7 June all of Year 10 embark on a week of work experience.

They have chosen a great variety of placements – from Gyms and Nurseries to a Fish Farm in Cornwall; from The Mousehouse Design to The Bristol College of Dance; from Gloucester Cricket Club to firms of Solicitors and Accountants.

Many are trying out a career interest to see if it would really suit them; all of them will find out more about the world of work. We hope it will be as successful as last year when pupils reported back that they had learned a lot about particular careers and about the demands of work. They also felt it had improved their confidence in dealing with an adult environment, in using public transport, answering the ‘phone and generally gaining in maturity and responsibility.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP

A group of 57 Year 10 Geography students spent a fantastic day on the south Dorset coastline on Wednesday 14th May. The unique World Heritage Site provided the students with some outstanding landforms of coastal erosion which they need as part of their GCSE work. The visibility was great as we sat there and looked east towards Worbarrow Bay and then west towards Portland and Chesil Beach. During the day two Lulworth Rangers helped with field sketching and answered many questions. It is such a beautiful area and all the students benefited from experiencing physical geography first hand. We represented some of the 750,000 people who venture there each year and as a bonus we managed to arrange a little slice of sunshine.

SOPHIE HALL

Sophie Hall with Frank Bruno and her mum

Another Colston's girl making the headlines musically is Sophie Hall.

Sophie writes about her career so far:

" I started singing at about 13 but I have always loved music for as long as I can remember. However, I had always shied away from singing as it’s so personal and I didn’t have the confidence to try.

I began singing on my own in my room everyday, practising and songwriting, praying for the day that I could build up my confidence and perform to others.

At 14 I discovered Studio 7, or rather they discovered me! I plucked up the courage, did the audition and got in! Studio 7 is directed by a talented, inspirational woman call Kizzy Morrell and is a performing arts school for inner city youths. With her, I gained my confidence, learned a lot about myself and improved as a performer tremendously.

I have performed at many events and places such as Ashton Court, Colston Hall and my biggest so far, The Commonwealth Games Awards. There I met lost of celebrities and was made a few offers for other events. I also have a song that I wrote and sang which was recorded last year with the producer Nigel Ipinson-Fleming. We may record again this summer.

So here I am now, I’m still only 15 and have a bit of growing up to do before I think about contracts and record deals. Besides, my education is my priority and I plan to finish school knowing that I’ve done my best and that nothing I have done has hindered my studies. So for now I’ll keep singing for the fun and enjoy the many experiences, but watch this space!"
